Behold is from an ongoing series of paintings based on McCagg's perceptions about the human experience, of being next to something, being alone, or being with someone very close but not touching.
Her observations about life are expressed using paint and graphite to make the composition, the relationships of color, forms, and the space articulated with line and marks.
The painting’s meaning is created by the juxtaposition of the parts. Like in language, the meaning evolves as words are strung together. In the painting, absence and presence together create meaning.
About the Artist
Xanda McCagg is an American abstract artist who lives and works in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. A classically trained painter, she has evolved into a style that abandons figuration in search of evoking the human essence.
