Antony Densham is an abstract artist based in Aotearoa, New Zealand, known for developing a visual language that embraces the ephemeral aspects of the landscape.

Education

Antony Densham's artistic journey progressed through fine arts at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2006 and a Postgraduate Diploma in 2011, demonstrating his commitment to honing his artistic skills.

Technique

Regarding the relationship between abstraction and figuration, Densham explores a middle ground that confounds space through the interchange of revealing and concealing. His marks on the canvas are independent gestures yet also acknowledge the viewer's tendency to search for representation within the artwork. Densham's approach to landscape painting is deeply introspective. He views the process of painting as akin to experiencing a vista—a comprehensive mental view over a stretch of time or events. He believes in the importance of slowing down, relooking, and revisiting a landscape, as it helps to internalize both the physical landscape and his painting practice. His works encapsulate a palimpsest of decisions made over time, aiming to evoke a sense of an ever-changing psychological landscape in the viewer.

Inspiration

Aotearoa boasts a diverse terrain and weather, featuring glaciers, fiords, mountains, plains, hillsides, forests, and volcanoes, all of which influence Densham's artistic expression. His paintings reflect this diversity through their implied and faceted nature. Antony Densham's artistic inspiration emanates from the rich tapestry of landscapes found in his homeland of Aotearoa, New Zealand. The breathtaking beauty of the country's diverse terrain—from its rugged mountains and serene fiords to its lush forests and expansive plains—serves

Exhibitions & Awards

Densham's artistic achievements include being selected as a finalist in prestigious awards such as the James Wallace Art Awards, the NZ Painting and Printmaking Award, the Molly Morpeth-Canaday Art Award, and the National Contemporary Art Award. In 2001, he won the New Zealand Art and Faith Award. His works have been exhibited in New Zealand, Australia, China, and the United States.
