Andy Harwood is a contemporary Australian abstract artist whose meticulous geometric paintings fuse mathematical precision with the neurological mechanics of perception, creating vibrant works that balance structural order with human emotion.
He lives and works in Brisbane, Australia.

Education and Early Career

Born in 1983, Harwood earned a Bachelor of Design in 2004, a foundational period that instilled a rigorous, disciplined approach to composition and form. He initially emerged from Brisbane’s high-energy street art culture and grassroots artist-run initiatives, co-founding Love Love Studios in 2008. Following international residencies in London and Berlin, Harwood transitioned away from the intense, aerosol-driven interventions of his early career, shifting his focus entirely toward a sophisticated visual language of non-representational, hard-edge abstraction.

Inspiration

Deeply influenced by the Bauhaus legacy and Op Art pioneers like Josef Albers and Richard Anuszkiewicz, Harwood’s practice is an ongoing investigation into the "mechanics of vision." He explores the tension between chaos and order, aiming to conceptualize the sensation of a "ruminating brain in flux."

His compositions frequently utilize the numerology of 9, a symbol of unity and transcendence, to structure the interaction of shape and position. By misdirecting the gaze and preventing the eye from settling on a single focal point, his work forces the viewer to inhabit a liminal zone between stillness and movement, tapping into the power of subconscious suggestion.

"My work centers on the balancing of chaos and order. By manipulating the mechanics of vision through precise geometry and tonal gradients, I aim to conceptualize the sensation of a mind in flux. The paintings act as visual catalysts—interfering with spatial planes to engage the viewer's subconscious and evoke a deep, emotive response that bridges the gap between strict mathematical structure and the fluid nature of human existence." (Andy Harwood)

Technique

Harwood’s execution is virtually flawless, reflecting both his design background and a deep respect for his medium. Working primarily with synthetic polymer on canvas, he employs a sophisticated process that pairs hand-cut masking techniques with semi-transparent, painterly layering. This meticulous method creates a striking illusion of topographical depth. By juxtaposing the sharp precision of hard-edge geometric forms with the softness of translucent color gradients, Harwood infuses his static canvases with a kinetic energy, producing a "reverberating hum" of light, space, and color.

Exhibitions

Harwood has achieved significant institutional recognition in Australia. A pivotal milestone was his inclusion in the 2021 Bauhaus Now! exhibition at the Museum of Brisbane, which subsequently acquired his piece 9 to the power of 9 (2) for its permanent collection, solidifying his place in the direct lineage of high-modernist abstraction. He is also a multi-year finalist in the prestigious Sunshine Coast National Art Prize (2024, 2025) and exhibits his work in prominent solo and group shows nationwide.
