Frédéric Prat

1966
(France) French

Frédéric Prat is a French contemporary artist renowned for his abstract paintings featuring monochrome backgrounds and luminous acrylic forms. He lives and works in Paris

Education

Prat studied with the artists Claude Viallat, Joel Kermarrec and Toni Grand, at Ecole Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris where he graduated in 1992.

Technique

After making numerous oil paintings, Frédéric Prat evolved to acrylic, using it exclusively since 2005.

His abstract works emphasize the relationships between colour, surface, and line without representing any expression.

Inspiration

Prat’s work is deeply influenced by the Supports-Surfaces movement, which emphasizes art’s self-referential nature rather than connections to history or real-life events.

Drawing inspiration from abstract expressionists like Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning, and Ad Reinhardt, Prat focuses on the canvas, colour, and design as the central themes of his work.

Since 2020, he has exclusively explored the square format, using complex, centred painted gestures to transcend traditional boundaries between representation, figuration, and abstraction, thereby affirming the autonomy of the artwork.

Collections

His work is included in the Museum of Modern Art Grand-Duc Jean (Mudam) in Luxembourg

Exhibitions

Frédéric Prat has exhibited in France, Luxembourg and Germany
