Jeremy Annear is een Engelse schilder die in zijn vroege vormende jaren in aanraking kwam met het modernisme van St Ives. Hij woont en werkt in Cornwall.

Onderwijs

Annear studeerde Schilderkunst en Grafiek aan het Exeter College of Art in de late jaren zestig.

Techniek

Annear werkt voornamelijk met olie op paneel en canvas. De vormen, kleuren en structuren zijn opgebouwd in reliëfachtige lagen, wat resulteert in aantrekkelijke texturen, oppervlakken en randen.

"Ik speel constant met het aanbrengen van verf op verf, nat op nat. Ik heb altijd veel verf op mijn ondergronden willen gooien. Een deel van de diepste voldoening van schilderen voor mij is geweest om precies te bereiken wat ik wil met de verf."

inspiratie

Jeremy Annear werd als jonge kunstenaar blootgesteld aan de St Ives-groep en werd beïnvloed door het werk van Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Roger Hilton en Terry Frost. Zijn schilderijen vertonen overeenkomsten met Europese modernisten zoals Braque, Picasso en Miro. Jeremy's abstracte schilderijen reageren op de natuurlijke geometrie en transformaties van zijn geliefde Cornische landschap. Hij heeft ook uitgebreid gewerkt in Duitsland en Australië en heeft invloeden uit beide culturen in zijn werk opgenomen.

Het werk van Annear is breed geprezen en becommentarieerd door talrijke kunstcritici, curatoren, kunstschrijvers, kunstenaars en historici, zoals Andrew Lambirth (The Spectator), Graham Boyd (Kunstenaars), Mercedes Smith (Schrijver en criticus), Ian Collins (Kunstschrijver en curator), Nicholas Usherwood (Kunstschrijver en uitgever), Dr. Jane Hamilton (Kunstactivist en Historicus) of Rachel Barnes (Docent aan de Tate en schrijver bij The Guardian en The Independent).

Een van de meest lovende (maar niet onware) opmerkingen over Annear komt van Caroline Georgiadis, voorheen hoofd verkoop van Britse schilderijen bij Christie's en momenteel haar eigen kunstadviespraktijk leidend: "Jeremy Annear (...) is een Europese modernistische schilder in de geest van grote kunstenaars zoals Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso en Georges Braque."

Tentoonstellingen

Annear heeft voornamelijk en regelmatig in het VK geëxposeerd, maar zijn werk werd ook tentoongesteld in Duitsland, Frankrijk en Nederland.
