Jill Moser is een Amerikaanse abstracte kunstenaar wiens werk de kruising van "schilderkunst, schrijven en het geanimeerde beeld" verkent. Ze woont en werkt in New York City.

Onderwijs

Moser behaalde haar B.A. aan de Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1978, en haar M.F.A. aan Hunter College, New York, in 1981. Ze heeft een New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Fellowship en een Max Beckmann Scholarship in Painting van het Brooklyn Museum ontvangen. Ze heeft lesgegeven aan Princeton, Virginia Commonwealth University en verschillende andere prestigieuze instellingen.

Techniek

Moser heeft een interdisciplinaire praktijk die schilderkunst, drukkunst, tekenen en collage omvat. Haar drukwerk omvat een diverse reeks technieken, zoals lithografie, etsen, monoprint, intaglio en zeefdruk. Haar werk kan worden begrepen in relatie tot de geschiedenis van geschreven taal—tekens die betekenis dragen. Haar penseelstreken zijn lyrisch, gebaarlijk en kalligrafisch. De lijnen en vormen lijken aanvankelijk spontaan, maar ze evolueren door een methodisch, indexicaal proces. Moser construeert haar composities in termen van figuren op een achtergrond. De oppervlakken zijn gelaagd en textuur, waardoor een gevoel ontstaat dat de lijnen, tekens en figuren in een dimensionale ruimte zijn opgeschort. Kleur en toon voegen emotioneel en visueel gewicht toe aan het werk, waardoor beelden ontstaan die tegelijkertijd zelfreferentieel zijn, onthullend voor het proces van hun creatie, en open voor de interpretatie van kijkers.

inspiratie

Moser laat zich inspireren door talen, of ze nu geschreven, visueel, indexicaal of gebaar zijn. Ze zoekt naar een balans die vergelijkbaar is met die van een dichter—tussen het overbrengen van voldoende betekenis zodat de kijker een begeleide onthullende ervaring heeft, en het toestaan van voldoende ruimte voor verrassing tijdens de creatie en presentatie van het werk, zodat er extra lagen van betekenis kunnen ontstaan. Ze vindt ook inspiratie in zaken zoals de taal van de filmkunst, de geschiedenis van de symboliek en het samenwerkingsproces, waarbij ze schrijvers uitnodigt om teksten bij te dragen die Moser vervolgens interpreteert in abstracte visuele composities.

Moser heeft uitgebreid over de hele wereld geëxposeerd, waaronder in het Smithsonian American Art Museum en het Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
