Danny Giesbers, born in 1986 in Roermond, Netherlands, is a Dutch contemporary abstract painter currently based in The Hague. Known for his methodical, algorithmic approach combined with intuitive processes, Giesbers creates contemporary paintings that appear digitally inspired yet are entirely analog. His work explores the juxtapositions between control and chaos, investigating the complexities of movement, form, and transformation through a unique technique influenced by screenprinting, traditional printmaking, and Japanese methods.

Education

While self-taught as an artist, Giesbers' formal education is in business, having completed two degrees: a Bachelor's in International Business and Languages, followed by a Master's in Business Administration with a specialization in Strategic Management. His studies included international experience with a minor in Cracow and an internship in Vienna. Though not formally trained in art, Giesbers notes that his business education, particularly in strategic management, has enhanced his ability to develop artistic concepts and run his art practice professionally.

Inspiration

His work draws significant influence from Abstract Expressionism, particularly artists like Jackson Pollock, Gerhard Richter, and Willem de Kooning. Giesbers is drawn to works that balance chaos with serenity, citing additional influences from Mark Rothko's color field paintings and Dan Flavin's fluorescent light works. His "Minimal Complexity" series employs minimal movements and calming colors to induce a state of peace in viewers, while his "Shifts" series explores themes of transformation and the interrelationships between forces in the physical world.

Technique

Giesbers has developed a distinctive painting method that combines algorithmic precision with intuitive execution. His process involves applying seemingly textureless paint strokes separated by transparent layers, with each stroke playing a crucial role in the overall composition. Notable is his commitment to perfection - rather than making adjustments, he opts to erase and redo entire layers, sometimes repeating this process up to thirty times. For his 'Shifts' series, Giesbers incorporates phosphorescent paints to create luminescent fields of color that actively transform as lighting conditions change. These paintings take on a dual nature - appearing one way in normal lighting conditions, but revealing new dimensions and glowing elements when viewed in darkness. Rather than being passive objects for viewing, these works become active participants in their environment, literally shifting their appearance and creating a second viewing experience as day turns to night or as lighting conditions are altered. This technique allows Giesbers to make a statement about transformation and the interrelationship between forces and elements in the physical world, what he refers to as 'Transformative Abstraction.'

Exhibitions

Giesbers has established a growing presence in the contemporary art market, particularly in Asia where his work has been featured in prestigious art fairs and gallery exhibitions. His exhibition schedule includes presentations at established venues across Europe and Asia, with a particular focus on the Taiwanese art market. This international exhibition history demonstrates the increasing recognition of his innovative approach to abstract painting.

Representation

IdeelArt has been promoting Giesbers' unique artistic vision internationally since 2021.
