Leon Phillips (f. Spalding, Saskatchewan, Canada) er en samtids abstrakt maler baseret i Vancouver, hvis arbejde udforsker farvens materialitet og den fysiske interaktion mellem kunstner, værktøjer og medium. Hans malerier undersøger forholdet mellem gestus, materialets egenskaber og perceptuel oplevelse, og skaber værker, der overskrider blot visuel oplevelse for at fremkalde kropslige reaktioner hos beskueren.

Uddannelse

Phillips har både en Bachelor of Arts i Studio Art fra University of Saskatchewan (1982-1985) og en Bachelor of Environmental Studies fra University of Waterloo School of Architecture (1985-1989). Denne dobbelte baggrund i billedkunst og arkitektur informerer hans unikke tilgang til rum, struktur og farveforhold i hans arbejde. Hans kunstneriske udvikling blev væsentligt påvirket af den canadiske maler Otto Rogers, selvom Phillips i høj grad er autodidakt i sin malerpraksis.

Inspiration

Phillips' kunstneriske påvirkninger er mangfoldige og henter inspiration fra kunstnere, der arbejdede wet into wet, såsom Willem De Kooning og Chaïm Soutine. Han beundrer deres evne til at opnå kromatisk klarhed og udtryksfuldt lys gennem umiddelbare, intuitive malemetoder. Værkerne af Stanley Whitney, Ed Moses og Bernard Frize har i høj grad formet hans praksis - Whitneys strukturelle brug af farve, Moses' materialecentrerede tilgang og Frizes innovative teknikker stemmer alle overens med Phillips' kunstneriske filosofi.

"Jeg tilbragte meget tid udendørs, hvor jeg arbejdede og legede på vores gård. Der er virkelig intet, der kan sammenlignes med det uendelige rum og det klare lys på de canadiske prærier... Mit arbejde har altid handlet om rum, lys og bevægelse," delte Phillips i et interview med Artworkarchive.org, hvor han forbinder sine kunstneriske temaer med sine formative oplevelser på Saskatchewan-prærien.

Teknik

Phillips' karakteristiske tilgang fokuserer på farvens og malingens materialitet, hvor pigmenter ses som aktive samarbejdspartnere frem for inerte materialer. Han arbejder horisontalt for at forhindre dryp og bevare malingens viskositet, ved brug af specifikt udvalgte Da Vinci-børster, som han betragter som forlængelser af sit sensoriske system. Hans proces involverer arbejde med både olie og akvarel, hvor hvert medie informerer det andet. Til sine oliemalerier anvender han et omhyggeligt udformet fortynder, der forhindrer overflader i at blive klistrede og giver en satinmat finish. Når han arbejder med akvarel, bruger han store mængder vand for at skabe forvredne, topografiske overflader, hvor pigmentet – frigjort fra sit bindemiddel – kan bevæge sig og udtrykke sig.

Udstillinger

Phillips har udstillet bredt i Nordamerika og Europa med bemærkelsesværdig institutionel anerkendelse, herunder hans deltagelse i Mark Rothko International Painting Symposium i Letland. Hans arbejde har været vist på anerkendte steder i Canada og internationalt, hvilket demonstrerer en vedvarende forpligtelse til at fremme moderne abstrakt maleri.

Priser og anerkendelser

Phillips har modtaget adskillige tilskud fra prestigefyldte institutioner, herunder Canada Council for the Arts og British Columbia Arts Council.
