Completed in 2018, this site-specific work measures 18 feet (5.5 metres) in height by 146.5 feet (44,6 metres) in length, covering approximately 2,637 square feet of the station's glass curtain wall. It transforms the building's facade into a luminous, large-scale landmark that bridges the gap between civic infrastructure and fine art.
Artistic Vision & Technique
The installation consists of meticulous, translucent layers with alternating hues of green and blue that overlap horizontally. These layers create shifting, abstract geometric patterns of light that evolve throughout the day as the sun moves across the building.
Frank’s design is an homage to the San Francisco Bay, alluding to a water surface in constant motion. By utilizing the transparency of the glass, the work offers a meditation on the transient nature of time—the transition from past to present—while maintaining a vibrant, forward-looking aesthetic. Education
From 1984 to 1987, Bernadette Jiyong Frank studied at the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles, CA. In 1988, she also participated in a Continuing Education Program at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
Technique
Bernadette Jiyong Frank employs multiple layers of translucent paint in her artwork. Each layer is applied slowly and deliberately, allowing time for the paint to dry before applying the next layer.
