教育背景

Gordon於1944年出生於波士頓,在芝加哥長大。自1967年起,他的藝術生涯主要在紐約市度過,除了1970年代曾在密西根大學、麻薩諸塞大學、威斯康辛大學及檀香山藝術博物館任教的幾年。

該藝術家於1966年獲得布朗大學藝術學士學位,1969年獲得亨特學院藝術碩士學位。1960年代末,他曾在藝術家Tony Smith和George Sugarman的工作室擔任助理[i]

技法

在他的職業生涯早期,Gordon 製作了約十年的成形三維畫布。但在1970年代中期,他「重新開始」(正如他所說),重新從繪畫最基本的元素出發,使用標記和線條作為他的主要媒介或切入點。

從一系列作品到另一系列,結果有時偏向線性,有時偏向標記群集,還有時偏向被描繪出的形狀。線條和書法的特質涵蓋整個範圍,從無限細的鉛筆線(形狀邊緣)到非常寬廣的筆觸,寬到足以成為形狀本身。...

在他2010-2014年的畫作中, 線條 成為形狀的邊緣,為 色彩的充分表達提供明確區域。Gordon 也將單一形狀、相鄰形狀和形狀群視為整幅畫作中獨立的小畫作。

在他的創作中,藝術家不使用土色或黑色,而只用光譜色彩創造清晰、具體且強烈的作品。當被問及他的色彩方法時,Gordon 說:「畫家需要純色,就像作曲家需要純淨精確的音調一樣。」

靈感

當被問及靈感來源時,藝術家說:「我受到所有經驗和觀察的啟發,來自人們、城市、 風景 和藝術,創作出如過去偉大大師畫作般充實、豐富、完整且有意義的抽象畫。我希望我的藝術能激發深刻的感受與思考,以及愉悅和喜悅。基本上,它提出並回答兩個問題:活著是什麼感覺,藝術是什麼。」...

Dana Gordon 在年輕時期沉浸於藝術環境中,多次造訪芝加哥藝術學院。然而,使他理解創造力的早期頓悟來自他青少年時期造訪的爵士俱樂部:聆聽和觀看 Miles Davis 與 John Coltrane 的即興演奏,正如 Gordon 所說,「是在藝術天才們創作時,實時進入他們的創意思維中。」

1960年代末居住在曼哈頓市中心的 Gordon 被一個集中且非常活躍的藝術世界包圍。在 Hunter College 學習繪畫和雕塑期間,他的老師包括 如 Tony Smith、George Sugarman、Ad Reinhardt,以及 Ralph Humphrey 等藝術家。

Dana Gordon 的構圖喚起了某種 Orphism Cubism 的感覺,作品如萬花筒般多彩且富有沉思性。繪畫時,Gordon 對色彩、形狀與線條之間的視覺對話感興趣。

這種對藝術的理解不僅體現在他的畫作中,也體現在他為多個出版物撰寫的關於其靈感來源之一、藝術家 Camille Pissarro 的文章中。 

Gordon 在 2007 年《華爾街日報》中寫到關於 Pissarro:「Pissarro 通常被認為是第一位印象派畫家。但在他生前,他以更多成就聞名。實質上,他是第一位抽象藝術家。他展示了繪畫的基本特質——色彩、筆觸、材質、線條、形狀、構圖——本身就具有意義,並將油彩轉化為純粹的視覺詩歌。」

"每次開始創作一幅畫時,都會面臨存在主義的問題,這最終使作品值得觀看和創作。一般來說,我嘗試讓我所經歷的一切影響我的繪畫,然後讓過程自行理清。這個過程就像與畫作的對話(常常是爭論),既是精神上的也是身體上的。"

繪畫是一種全面且開放式的視覺語言,表達智力、心理和情感。(其本質純粹是視覺的,完全不是敘事、文學、學術、理論或政治的。)

歷史上,抽象源自各種藝術形式,但從根本上說,它也是這些藝術的基礎。抽象形式包含我們對自然的觀察,並存在於所有自然之中。
