Kyong Lee è un'artista astratta coreana il cui lavoro concilia realtà fisiche ed emotive attraverso un'esplorazione multidisciplinare del colore, del materiale, del processo e della forma. Vive e lavora a Seoul, Corea.

Formazione

Lee ha conseguito la laurea in Arti presso la Hong-ik University di Seoul, Corea, nel 1991. Ha ottenuto il Master presso l'Università di Belle Arti di Braunschweig, Germania, nel 2000.
Dal 2001 al 2002 è stata artista residente presso il noto programma internazionale SSamzieSpace Studio Residence, Seoul, Corea.

Tecnica

Lee è dedita alla precisione nei suoi processi. Pianifica meticolosamente le sue scelte cromatiche e dedica un tempo fisso alla miscelazione di ogni colore. Per creare i suoi dipinti a colori sfumati, prima applica strisce di nastro adesivo sulle superfici. Ogni strato di vernice viene applicato in un arco di tempo fisso e lasciato riposare per un altro intervallo di tempo definito. Questo è un processo di costruzione, stratificazione, accumulo. Le gradazioni esprimono relazioni tra colori e momenti. Alcuni suoi dipinti presentano del testo. Per queste opere, Lee imprime in rilievo la parola scelta per il pezzo sulla superficie e poi applica una tonalità monocromatica che si collega e collabora con la parola selezionata. Il colore occupa la parola e riempie tutto lo spazio circostante. Per Lee, il processo è poetico ed essenziale al significato dell'opera.

Ispirazione

Nel suo lavoro, Lee risponde alle sue esperienze emotive all'interno del suo ambiente fisico. Il colore è il suo linguaggio visivo principale. Per lei, il colore non è solo autoreferenziale. Il colore si riferisce anche a stati emotivi. È un modo di esprimere sentimenti, di proiettare pensieri e di evocare i processi naturali della vita. Lee è ispirata dal flusso del tempo e dalla stratificazione delle esperienze. Contempla la memoria e i modi in cui la sua visione del passato cambia con l'accumulo del tempo. È anche interessata all'automatismo. Attraverso processi inconsci ha creato connessioni tra diversi modi di comunicare, come associare parole specifiche a particolari tonalità nella sua serie Color as Adjective. Inoltre, Lee si interessa all'inclinazione del pianeta sul suo asse. La Terra è inclinata di 23,5 gradi, una condizione che ci fa sperimentare le stagioni come le conosciamo. Lee si chiede se ci sia una correlazione tra questa falsa supposizione che stiamo in piedi orizzontalmente e altre supposizioni che facciamo, come le nostre supposizioni, come dice lei, "l'orizzonte delle emozioni."

Collezioni

Le opere di Lee fanno parte di numerose collezioni pubbliche e istituzionali, tra cui il Seoul Museum of Art, lo Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art e il National Museum of Contemporary Art, Art Bank, Seoul, Corea. Wells Fargo ha recentemente acquisito 16 sue opere per la sua collezione aziendale.
