Kyong Lee is een Koreaanse abstracte kunstenaar wiens werk fysieke en emotionele realiteiten verzoent door middel van een multidisciplinaire verkenning van kleur, materiaal, proces en vorm. Ze woont en werkt in Seoul, Korea.

Onderwijs

Lee ontving haar Bachelor of Arts-graad van de Hong-ik Universiteit in Seoul, Korea, in 1991. Ze behaalde haar Masterdiploma aan de Universiteit voor Schone Kunsten in Braunschweig, Duitsland, in 2000.
Van 2001-2002 was ze de Artist in Residence bij het internationaal bekende SSamzieSpace Studio Residence Program, Seoul, Korea.

Techniek

Lee is toegewijd aan precisie in haar processen. Ze plant haar kleurkeuzes zorgvuldig en besteedt een vaste hoeveelheid tijd aan het mengen van elke kleur. Om haar graduele kleurenschilderijen te creëren, legt ze eerst tape in stroken over de oppervlakken. Elke laag verf wordt aangebracht over een vaste tijdspanne en krijgt vervolgens een andere vaste hoeveelheid tijd om te rusten. Dit is een proces van opbouwen, lagen, accumuleren. De gradaties drukken relaties uit tussen kleuren en momenten. Sommige van haar schilderijen bevatten tekst. Voor deze werken debosseert Lee eerst het woord dat ze voor het stuk heeft geselecteerd in het oppervlak en past vervolgens een monochrome tint toe die correleert met, en samenwerkt met, het gekozen woord. De kleur bezet het woord en vult alle ruimte eromheen. Voor Lee is het proces poëtisch en essentieel voor de betekenis van het werk.

inspiratie

In haar werk reageert Lee op haar emotionele ervaringen binnen haar fysieke omgeving. Kleur is haar primaire visuele taal. Voor haar is kleur niet alleen zelfreferentieel. Kleur heeft ook betrekking op emotionele toestanden. Het is een manier om gevoel uit te drukken, om gedachten te projecteren en om de natuurlijke processen van het leven op te roepen. Lee is geïnspireerd door de stroom van de tijd en de gelaagdheid van ervaringen. Ze overdenkt geheugen en de manieren waarop haar visie op het verleden verandert met de accumulatie van tijd. Ze is ook geïnteresseerd in automatisme. Door onbewuste processen heeft ze verbindingen gelegd tussen verschillende manieren van communiceren, zoals het associëren van specifieke woorden met bepaalde tinten in haar Kleur als Bijvoeglijk Naamwoord serie. Daarnaast maakt Lee zich zorgen over de helling van de planeet op zijn as. De aarde is 23,5 graden gekanteld, een toestand die ons doet ervaren dat we de seizoenen op de manier ervaren die we doen. Lee vraagt zich af of er hier een correlatie is tussen onze valse aanname dat we horizontaal staan en andere aannames die we maken, zoals onze aannames over, zoals ze zegt, "de horizon van emoties."

Werken van Lee bevinden zich in meerdere openbare en institutionele collecties, waaronder die van het Seoul Museum of Art, het Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art en het National Museum of Contemporary Art, Art Bank, Seoul, Korea.

Tentoonstellingen

Het werk van Lee Kyong is uitgebreid tentoongesteld in solo- en groepstentoonstellingen in Korea en Duitsland. Recente solo-tentoonstellingen zijn onder andere Color as Adjective II in Chonan, Zuid-Korea, en Feeling, Language and Color in Seoul.
