Kyong Lee är en koreansk abstrakt konstnär vars arbete förenar fysiska och känslomässiga verkligheter genom en multidisciplinär utforskning av färg, material, process och form. Hon bor och arbetar i Seoul, Korea.

Utbildning

Lee tog sin kandidatexamen i konst från Hong-ik University i Seoul, Korea, 1991. Hon avlade sin masterexamen vid University of Fine Arts i Braunschweig, Tyskland, 2000.
Från 2001-2002 var hon Artist in Residence vid det internationellt välkända SSamzieSpace Studio Residence Program, Seoul, Korea.

Metod

Lee är dedikerad till precision i sina processer. Hon planerar noggrant sina färgval och avsätter en fast mängd tid för blandningen av varje färg. För att skapa sina graduerade färgmålningar lägger hon först tejp i remsor över ytorna. Varje lager färg appliceras under en fast tidsperiod och får vila under en annan fast tidsperiod. Detta är en process av uppbyggnad, lager på lager, ackumulering. Gradationerna uttrycker relationer mellan färger och ögonblick. Några av hennes målningar innehåller text. För dessa verk präglade Lee ordet hon har valt för verket i ytan först och applicerar sedan en monokromatisk nyans som korrelerar med, och samarbetar med, det valda ordet. Färgen upptar ordet och fyller hela utrymmet runt det. För Lee är processen poetisk och väsentlig för verkets betydelse.

inspiration

I sitt arbete svarar Lee på sina känslomässiga upplevelser inom sina fysiska omgivningar. Färg är hennes primära visuella språk. För henne är färg inte bara självreferentiell. Färg relaterar också till känslomässiga tillstånd. Det är ett sätt att uttrycka känslor, att projicera tankar och att framkalla livets naturliga processer. Lee inspireras av tidens flöde och lager av upplevelser. Hon kontemplerar minnet och hur hennes syn på det förflutna förändras med tidens ansamling. Hon är också intresserad av automatism. Genom omedvetna processer har hon skapat kopplingar mellan olika sätt att kommunicera, såsom att associera specifika ord med särskilda nyanser i sin Färg som Adjektiv serie. Dessutom är Lee bekymrad över planetens lutning på sin axel. Jorden lutar 23,5 grader, ett tillstånd som gör att vi upplever årstiderna på det sätt vi gör. Lee undrar om det finns en korrelation här mellan vår falska uppfattning om att vi står horisontellt och andra antaganden vi gör, såsom våra antaganden om, som hon säger, "horisonten av känslor."
