過程的藝術

「過程藝術」一詞描述了一種觀念,即藝術品本身不如其創作過程重要。最終的藝術作品可能僅被視為其產生行為的殘留物。這種觀點在二戰後逐漸興起,當時藝術家們越來越多地審視西方文明的傳統邏輯。過程藝術的一個經典範例是日本藝術家白髮一雄(Kazuo Shiraga)於1955年創作的《挑戰泥巴》(Challenge to the Mud),他是具體美術協會(Gutai Group)的成員。白髮一雄先製作了一塊泥地,然後將自己摔倒在地上與泥巴搏鬥。他的動作在泥土中留下痕跡,引發了藝術作品究竟是表演本身還是其產生的視覺現象的疑問。抽象表現主義畫家伊萊恩·德·庫寧(Elaine de Kooning)以她的觀察總結了過程藝術:「對我來說,繪畫主要是一個動詞,而非名詞。」
