Holly Miller 是一位美国抽象艺术家,她的画作通过抽象的语言,努力将视觉与触觉融合。她现居并工作于纽约布鲁克林。

教育背景

艺术家出生于纽约布法罗,60年代末至70年代初在意大利罗马长大。她的祖母偶尔会来探望 Holly 和她的家人,总是带她去博物馆探索不同的杰作。在纽约的高中时期,她只有一个梦想——搬回她度过童年的城市。毕业后,艺术家搬到了永恒之城,进入但丁·阿利吉耶里学校学习艺术史和意大利文学课程。

技法

经过长时间的实验,艺术家开始使用线——一种既具有绘画特性又具触觉和雕塑感的材料,既关联画布又承载无尽隐喻。她开始用长针和线代替铅笔在画布上作画。她找到了结合绘画、素描和雕塑的视觉媒介,同时保持简洁和谦逊。她通过多年探索、冒险、发现并舍弃非必要元素,达到了极简的境界。通过提炼她的经历、思想、感受和情绪,她创造了一种抽象的个人语言,成为她作品的精髓。...

“缝线的动作蕴含着穿刺与愈合、连接与破坏、撕裂与修补的隐喻。细小的刺痛提醒我们,美丽或温柔的事物也可能带有些许痛感。这正是作品中的诗意所在。”

通过将重复的线缝与几何色彩形状结合,她的作品传达了许多二元对立:简约绘画与手工艺、幻觉与材质、温暖与冷静、缺席与存在、阳刚与阴柔、大胆与细腻、完美与不完美……

这些画作具有一种通过单色笔触和穿透画布表面的线缝孔洞表现出的物理感,但远观时,它们看似平面,仿佛细线素描。走近画作时,惊喜元素显现,激发观者更仔细观察并质疑最初的假设或期待。

灵感来源

毕业后,艺术家再次回到意大利。她这一时期的大部分作品受罗伯特·劳申伯格、让-米歇尔·巴斯奎特和埃贡·席勒的启发。然而,四年后她觉得生活在那座美丽的城市就像生活在博物馆里,因此她意识到必须改变些什么,才能作为艺术家成长和拓展;她需要一个更现代的环境和与其他艺术家更广泛的对话。她回到纽约,确立了作为一位女性当代美国艺术家的根基。...

通过触觉(肢体语言)进行交流启发了她的触觉抽象画作。Miller 的调色板呼应了60至70年代意大利工业设计的色调和色彩,而她的形状则让人联想到建筑和城市结构。

她的作品与Fontana对绘画的物理处理和Burri对画面表面的触觉操控有极大亲和力。Ellsworth Kelly大胆的形状和色彩在纯视觉层面上与她产生共鸣。Agnes Martin细腻、安静、重复的线条,Fred Sandback强烈的建筑感极简纤维线条,Eva Hesse情感丰富的结构网,Richard Tuttle古怪新鲜的素描和朴素物件,Bridget Riley充满动感的视觉构图,都深刻影响了 Miller,激励她在抽象艺术中开辟自己的声音。
