All artworks on IdeelArt are original, signed, delivered directly from the artist's studio, and come with a certificate of authenticity."Framing" is a site-specific ground plane intervention created by Daniel Göttin as part of the monumental "Orange Pathway" project. Commissioned for the Fremantle Biennale 2021 (titled CROSSING), this collective work spans a 500-meter stretch of the pedestrian walkway between the Old Traffic Bridge and the Stirling Bridge in Fremantle, Australia. Göttin’s individual contribution, "Framing," occupies approximately 40 meters of this walkable ribbon, transforming a utilitarian concrete path into a rhythmic, non-objective experience.
Artistic Vision & Technique
As a core member of the Australian Centre for Concrete Art (AC4CA), Göttin applied his signature minimalist rigor to the ground beneath the viewer's feet. Using outdoor-grade paint, he created a sequence of bold, geometric "frames" in black, orange, and white that interact directly with the existing joints of the concrete slabs.
The work functions as a visual metronome for the pedestrian. By "framing" sections of the walkway, Göttin draws attention to the physical act of transit, encouraging walkers to engage with the spatiality and materiality of the path. The vibrant orange, the unifying color of the collective project, acts as a high-visibility marker against the coastal landscape, bridging the industrial harbor environment with the precision of hard-edge abstraction.
Context & Significance
The Orange Pathway is a landmark achievement for the AC4CA collective, featuring contributions from thirteen leading international and Australian artists. This "legacy artwork" was designed to remain permanently, serving as a physical manifestation of the group’s ideals: De Stijl, Minimalism, and the transformation of community spaces through non-representational art. In the context of the Biennale’s theme, CROSSING, Göttin’s section highlights the boundaries and passages we navigate daily, turning a simple stroll into a curated aesthetic event.
