Realized in the Pfeilerhalle (Pillar Hall) of the E-Werk Freiburg in 2026, this collaborative work pays tribute to the building's history as a former power plant. By activating the subterranean industrial space, the artists transform a once-functional infrastructure into a sensory labyrinth of light and structural force.
Artistic Vision & Technique
The installation is a masterclass in collaborative intervention. Daniel Göttin utilizes the rhythmic concrete pillars of the hall as anchors for a vast network of black industrial tension bands. These bands are stretched across the space to create a physical labyrinth that redefines the viewer's path and perception of the hall’s architecture.
Complementing this structural tension, Gerda Maise introduces atmospheric colored light into the dark basement. Through the strategic placement of red, green, and blue light sources, the functional industrial environment is dissolved and replaced with a chromatic landscape. The interplay between the solid concrete supports, the sharp lines of the tension bands, and the glowing aura of the light creates a state of perpetual visual "voltage," grounding the viewer in a heightened state of awareness.
Context & Significance
Created as a centerpiece for the 30th anniversary of E-Werk Freiburg, Spannung explores the relationship between architectural memory and contemporary abstraction. The project invites visitors to experience a "non-place" (a utility basement) as a site of profound aesthetic contemplation. By bridging the gap between Göttin’s Concrete Art background and Maise’s atmospheric lighting, the work demonstrates how site-specific art can revitalize industrial heritage, turning a historical relic into a living, "charged" environment.
