Undervisning

Werfel modtog sin Bachelor of Arts-grad fra Kirkland College (nu en del af Hamilton College) i Clinton, New York, og tog sin kandidatuddannelse på New York Studio School. Hun opnåede derefter sin Master of Fine Arts-grad fra Columbia University i New York. Hun er også modtager af en række prestigefyldte legater og tilskud og fører en fremtrædende karriere som professor i kunst, gæsteforelæser ved universiteter og kunstner i residens ved vigtige skoler og institutioner verden over.

Teknik

Werfel arbejder med en blanding af olier, akrylmaling og mixed media på lærred. Hendes baggrund er i landskabsmaleri, hvilket har hjulpet hende med at udvikle et skarpt øje for lys, farverelationer og kompositionsharmoni. Da hun overgik til abstraktion, forstærkede hun sin evne til at bruge disse sanseligheder til at formidle følelsesmæssige og atmosfæriske tilstande inden for det billedlige rum. I sine abstrakte malerier anvender hun ekspressive, lyriske bevægelser, der skaber udbrud af bevægelse og energi. Hendes farvevalg skaber et udvalg af nuancer fra de dæmpede og rolige til de livlige og elektriske. Ud over traditionelt penselarbejde inkorporerer hun medier som spraymaling og skabeloner for at opbygge lagdelte, komplekse og ekspressive kompositioner.

inspiration

Werfel har studeret og undervist over hele verden. Hun har fundet inspiration i variationerne mellem de billedlige landskaber, hun har været udsat for: for eksempel samspillet mellem bakkerne og lyset i Nordkalifornien og teksturerne og farverne i Bretagne, Frankrig. Hun er interesseret i, hvordan hverdagserfaringer påvirker hendes malerier. Hun kan blive inspireret tidligt på dagen af en spontan gestus og senere blive guidet af udsigten fra sit atelier. I sidste ende refererer hendes kompositioner ikke til noget enkelt. De er undersøgelser af lys, gennemsigtighed og farves kvaliteter i rummet.

Kunstnererklæring

"Som polyfoni i musikken består Werfels værk af teksturer af flere uafhængige "stemmer" eller kilder. Hun lagde flere elementer oven på hinanden for at skabe malede universer; indlejrede rester af gestus antyder fragmenter af minder, glimt inde i studiet eller uden for hendes vindue. Werfel skaber kompositioner, der ekkoer de rumlige kompleksiteter af landskaber, som hun var draget til, da hun malede udendørs - tumlende bakker eller undervandsrefleksioner. Men nu svæver fragmenter i flydende, slørede rum."
